Have You Considered a School Counseling Graduate Degree Online?

Many adults are going back to school to earn their online graduate level counseling degree. Counselors, and particularly those working in a school, help both teens and adults to deal with emotional stress caused by family, social pressures, environment, and a host of other reasons. In today's hectic and pressure filled society, the need for qualified counselors at all levels of education and types of schools is more important than ever.

In order to help students as a counselor, you must enroll into a school with a counseling program at the graduate level and complete your online coursework. Fortunately, online programs generally operate at an accelerated pace and you will finish much sooner than you would have if you had taken courses from a traditional school. Because of the delicate nature of counseling students on school property, a graduate degree from an online school is often preferred to a lower degree such as a bachelor's. Any counselor regardless of whether they work for a school or not must be licensed.

Many people believe that simply because they have earned their bachelor's degree they are fully qualified to counsel students and other adults. Unfortunately, this is not true. Most states and many employers are now requiring that counselors have a master's degree plus licensing. Going to school for counseling and earning your graduate degree online is the best choice if you truly want to counsel students in a school setting.

There are many courses that make up a graduate program in counseling. They are generally grouped into seven or eight core divisions:

  • Human development and growth
  • Cultural diversity and social diversity
  • Interpersonal relationships
  • Group collaboration and work
  • Career pursuits, growth and development
  • Assessing people
  • Program evaluation and program research
  • Professional and personal identity

Currently the demand is so great for anyone who has gone to school for counseling and earned their graduate degree online. There simply are not enough qualified individuals to fill all of the open job positions. This is particularly true in regards to areas such as probation, substance abuse, rehabilitation, and many behavioral disorders. Similar to persons working in the clinical healthcare industry, some counselors go back to school and study other areas and earn degrees in psychiatry, or psychology to supplement the education when they went to graduate school and earned their counseling degree online.

There are many people who need serious help and would benefit from spending some time with a counselor on a regular basis. The need for qualified individuals who went to school for counseling earned their graduate degree online is only growing, and at an increasing rate.
